CHICAGO – Individuals pursuing a career in masonry are now able to easily transfer their college credits at Illinois community colleges under a new law passed by state Rep. Mary Gill, D-Chicago.
“This update to transfer rules will provide greater flexibility for learners, and responsibly aligns masonry with other trade skill programs that are transferable,” Gill said. “Illinois is a great place for residents to pursue a trade career, and I’m proud to work with our local labor unions on legislative ideas that will help more people access these important fields.”
Gill partnered with the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers (BAC) to develop House Bill 5369 which will require Illinois community colleges to accept transfer credit from a student who has completed up to 30 hours in a masonry program at another institution. Previously, state law enabled such transfers for a number of trade and technical profession programs including welding, carpentry and medical assisting. “Our local BAC members play an integral role in building our community,” Gill said. “Let’s continue to encourage and develop a workforce for these good-paying jobs.” House Bill 5369 passed with bipartisan support and was recently signed into law by the governor.
