CALUMET CITY, Ill. – As Facebook, Snapchat, and other forms of social media continue to grow in popularity with young people, state Rep. Thaddeus Jones, D-Calumet City, is inviting area families to a discussion about keeping children safe on social media this month.

“As more young people use social media there have been many instances where individuals using platforms have either unknowingly broken the law or have become victims to predators,” Jones said. “My event is designed to give parents the information they need to know about social media, so they can have conversations with their children about what is and isn’t appropriate behavior when using these apps.”

Jones is encouraging local families to attend his Back-to-School Social Media Craze: An Evening with Representatives from Facebook on Monday, Aug. 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the Crete-Monee High School, located at 1515 W. Exchange St. in Crete.

Jones’ seminar will feature experts who will address topics concerning social media and its impact on schools, families, communities, individuals and the law. The seminar will include workshops and a special presentation and Q&A session by representatives from Facebook. Partners for Jones’ event include Kids in the Hall Youth Leadership Group, Coalition for Courageous Conversations & Change, Dr. Nakia Hall, Community Leader, state Rep. Anthony DeLuca, D-Chicago Heights, state Rep. Elgie Sims, D-Chicago, state Rep. Will Davis, D-East Hazel Crest, and state Sen. Napoleon Harris, D-Harvey.

“In many ways, social media has had a very positive impact on people’s lives and has helped families and friends stay closer together, but these advancements have not come with consequences,” Jones said. “By knowing the facts and understanding the possible risk of social media, parents can help their children enjoy the benefits, while limiting the risk.”
