Michelle Mussman, D-Schaumburg, is sponsoring a new measure to increase the age to buy tobacco products to 21.

“Smoking and the use of other tobacco products is a public health issue. The industry preys upon teenagers, drawing them in and causing them to form dangerous habits at an early age,” said Mussman. “Most smokers start smoking as teenagers, when they are more vulnerable to the addictive properties of nicotine, because research shows their brains are still developing.”

Mussman is sponsoring House Bill 4297, a measure that would raise the minimum wage to buy tobacco products, electronic cigarettes and other alternative nicotine products. The bill has received strong support from lawmakers around the state, and was passed out of the House Health & Healthcare Disparities Committee last week.

“Raising the minimum age to buy tobacco products to 21 is the right thing to do,” continued Mussman. “By keeping tobacco products out of the hands of teenagers, we will reduce the inevitable deaths, disease and health care costs for them now and on into their adult years.”

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – In recognition of the 10-year anniversary of Illinois’ comprehensive smoke-free air law, state Rep. Camille Lilly, D-Chicago, introduced legislation to further commit to reducing tobacco use amongst Illinoisans.

“It is important that we address the issue of nicotine addiction use now,” Lilly said. “We have too many health disparities in our society, and the use of tobacco is a contributing factor. As elected officials, it is our duty to invest in our youth, ensuring they live longer, healthier lives without chronic disease. Tobacco 21 brings forth the necessary education, information and participation that will help our youth make informed decisions.”

House Bill 4297 raises the age from 18 years of age to at least 21, reducing the number of individuals who will have the ability to purchase tobacco products, electronic cigarettes, and alternative nicotine products. 21% of African-American males in Illinois smoke, typically starting in the youth. These individuals have a higher incident rate for five of the 12 tobacco related cancers, including colon, rectal, lung, bronchitis and kidney when comparing to other races. Lilly is committed to bring awareness forward, as well as educating those who are disproportionately affected by the devastation of tobacco products.

“The tobacco industry has purposely targeted the African-American community, and frankly it is time to put a stop to it,” Lilly said. “Tobacco 21 is one way to break the chain of addiction and it remains a top priority of mine as a legislator to reverse these statistics and ensure that generations to come in Illinois have a better quality of life.

Lilly represents the 78th District, which includes parts of Chicago, Elmwood Park, Franklin Park, Oak Park, Melrose Park and River Grove.
