ROUND LAKE BEACH, Ill. – State Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake is sponsoring a measure to oppose out of touch efforts by career politicians in Springfield to impose a 475% tax increase on groceries and medicine.

“The solutions to our state’s financial problems cannot be solved on the backs of hard-working taxpayers and families,” Yingling said. “We cannot continue to govern from fiscal crisis to fiscal crisis by imposing new taxes. Most importantly, we most certainly should never raise taxes on items of necessity such as food and medicine.”

Yingling is sponsoring House Resolution 116 to oppose any attempt to increase the state sales tax on groceries and medicine. The proposal is one of many that Yingling is supporting to relieve the tax burden on the middle class. In addition to opposing the grocery tax, he is sponsoring property tax freeze proposals, introduced a measure to prevent taxpayer dollars from being used to protect incumbent politicians, pushed for a moratorium on the creation of new units of government and initiated cost-saving government consolidation measures.

“Increased taxes on the most basic necessities hurt middle-class families and senior citizens the most,” said Yingling. “I support responsible solutions to the state budget crisis that do not rely on taxing the middle-class out of their homes and livelihoods.”
