SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – In an effort to reduce noise from Chicago O’Hare International Airport, state Rep. John D’Amico, D-Chicago, is sponsoring a variety of proposals that work to study, monitor, and reduce noise that is generated from the airport’s air traffic.

“I know that many of you have experienced countless sleepless nights and disrupted days due to airplane noise,” D’Amico said. “While many feel powerless against O’Hare, I want to let you know that I will continue to fight for you in Springfield to provide relief against airplane noise.”

D’Amico is sponsoring a number of proposals including  House Bill 3240, which requires every airport in Illinois must upgrade its permanent noise monitoring system to ensure they are collecting better information; House Bill 3248, which requires the Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Transportation to conduct a study detailing the environmental and human health impact caused by runway and air traffic at O’Hare; and House Bill 3249, which creates a tax credit for individuals who soundproof their homes in an effort to mask aircraft noise.

“Residents’ quality of life has been hampered due to the rerouting of the flightpaths and increased noise,” D’Amico said. “We need to be looking at how we can reduce the level of noise produced and make sure we are giving tax relief to folks who are updating their homes as a result of the increased air-traffic.”
