SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Mike Halpin, D-Rock Island, has been named a regional delegate to a key commission tasked with developing and implementing a modern passenger rail system in the Midwest.

“The strength of our local infrastructure is crucial to our communities’ viability, and this includes the preservation and expansion of our existing passenger rail system,” said Halpin. “With sufficient investment, passenger rail can reduce congestion on roadways, be a safe and reliable mode of transportation in certain types of weather and overall play a more integral role in our larger transportation network.”

Halpin was appointed as a member of the Midwest Interstate Passenger Rail Commission (MIPRC), which brings together state leaders from across the Midwest to promote, coordinate and support regional improvements to passenger rail service. Formed by compact agreement in 2000, MIPRC’s current members are Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota and Wisconsin. The commission is comprised of a House and Senate appointee, governor’s designee and representative from the private sector from each state who work together to improve current infrastructure and plan long-term for intercity passenger rail service throughout the Midwest.
