Carol Ammons, D-Urbana, which eliminates current fees that inmates at both the Department of Corrections and Department of Juvenile Justice have to pay in order to receive potentially lifesaving medical care was signed into law by Gov. J.B. Pritzker.

“It is unjust that the current system charges burdensome fees to people who are simply seeking routine medical services and lack the resources to pay for them,” Ammons said. “This legislation ensures that as we work to expand access to health care, we do not forget about marginalized communities.”

Ammons worked to pass House Bill 2045, which eliminates burdensome co-payment fees that inmates are required to pay in order to receive non-emergency medical and dental services. During her time in the legislature, Ammons has been a tireless advocate for criminal justice reform, championing legislation to reform Illinois’ bail system and ensuring individuals are able to smoothly transition back into society after serving their time.

“Access to affordable health care is vital to help treat potentially serious medical conditions, and the elimination of these fees will allow more inmates to receive that care,” Ammons said. “I appreciate Governor Pritzker’s commitment to criminal justice reform. While more work remains, this is a crucial step in the right direction to ensuring health care is accessible to all.”
