SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – State Rep. Michelle Mussman, D-Schaumburg, is encouraging area residents to take advantage of the Illinois Secretary of State’s Email Renewal Notices program because e-mail reminders are more reliable, efficient, and economical.

“We all live very busy lives. Between work, family, and every other responsibility we hold, some things just fall through the cracks,” said Mussman. “Unfortunately, if you take too long to renew your license plate registration, this mistake can cost you money.  Receiving more than one reminder can be quite a help.”

After submitting your information at https://www.ilsos.gov/greenmail, you will receive several reminder emails – the first a month before your vehicle registration is set to expire, a follow-up a few weeks later if you have not had a chance to renew, and a final reminder if you have allowed your registration to expire.

“An added benefit to signing up for renewal notices online is that the state will spend less taxpayer dollars on paper for printing renewal notices and the postage they require for mailing,” said Mussman. “The state saves money, fewer trees are cut down, and you’re more likely to remember to pay your renewal on time.”

You will need your Registration ID and PIN, which can be found on the paper renewal notice you received the year before. If you don’t have a notice, please call the Secretary of State’s Public Inquiry Division at 800-252-8980.

Mussman serves the 56th District, which includes portions of Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates, Elk Grove Village, Hanover Park, Roselle, Rolling Meadows, and Palatine.

CHICAGO – Recognizing that hard working families have time consuming schedules, state Rep. Justin Slaughter, D-Chicago, is encouraging residents to avoid fines and stay up to date with their vehicle registration by using the Secretary of State’s Email Renewal Notice Program.

“This program allows residents to be notified multiple times in advance of their vehicle registration deadline,” said Slaughter. “It’s easy for a mailed document to get lost in the shuffle, which is why having emailed notices can make it easier to know when you need to get your registration updated.”

Residents can visit ilsos.gov/greenmail to sign up for the email notices. They will be asked to provide their vehicle Registration ID and PIN number they were previously given, but can call the Secretary of State at 1-800-252-8980 if they do not remember it. Those who register will receive several reminder emails – the first, a month before the vehicle registration is set to expire, a follow-up a few weeks later if the owner has yet to renew and a final reminder once the registration has expired.

Last year, the Secretary of State’s office temporarily suspended mailing traditional reminders in response to the state budget impasse. The email notices, however, were not suspended.

“It was disappointing to see so many residents last year receive tickets for their registration expiring, simply because they were not aware,” Slaughter said. “By participating in this program, residents can ensure that they will receive notification in a timely manner.”

CHICAGO – In an effort to help working families avoid costly fees for license plate renewals this year, state Rep. Sonya Harper, D-Chicago, is encouraging residents to enroll in the Illinois Secretary of State’s Email Renewal Notice Program.

“This email service helps Illinois save from spending taxpayer dollars during our historic budget impasse, which caused many car owners to receive outrageously high fees because the Secretary of State’s office was unable to mail renewal notifications in a timely manner,” said Harper. “Even though the Secretary of State’s office has started sending out paper reminders again, this is a program that people should sign up for in order to receive multiple notices before their vehicle’s registration expires.”

Harper is highlighting the Illinois Secretary of State’s Email Renewal Notice Program website that is free to sign up for: https://www.ilsos.gov/greenmail/. Vehicle owners can input their Registration ID and PIN numbers located on their paper renewal notice on the website to receive the email notifications. After submission, several reminder emails will be sent to vehicle owners about their vehicle registration status. The first reminder will be one month before the expiration, and the second notification will be one week prior to expiration. The final reminder will be sent after the vehicle registration has expired. If residents did not receive a renewal notice in the mail, please call the Secretary of State’s Public Inquiry Division at 1-800-252-8980 for assistance.

“I want to help people in my district from falling victim to more unaffordable fees, and the Renewal Notice Program can help do so,” said Harper. “I strongly recommend that anyone who is able to sign up for this program do so to find out the status of their vehicle’s registration. It’s never too early to enroll in this program, but hopefully it isn’t too late for anyone to get their notifications before their expiration has passed.”
