“Route 66 is famous around the world and people visit from all over to travel it and see the sights,” Walsh said. “I’m thankful for the opportunity to be part of this commission and celebrate the history of the Mother Road.”

The Route 66 Centennial Commission is a bipartisan group of elected officials and appointees from the governor’s office and the various state agencies. They will meet quarterly to discuss the planning of official events, programs, and activities for the upcoming Route 66 centennial celebration in 2026. The commission will be overseen by the Illinois Office of Tourism and Walsh will serve on the commission. Walsh’s position on the commission is on a volunteer basis, which means he will not receive pay or reimbursements.

“Right now our state is the only one planning any sort of celebration for the Mother Road,” Walsh said. “Route 66 cuts right through our community which means when people come to enjoy this once in a lifetime they will be supporting our local economy.”

Larry Walsh, Jr., D-Elwood, held a hearing with the House Transportation: Regulation, Roads & Bridges Committee in Springfield last week to hear testimony from state and Will County transportation officials on the safety and conditions of the Des Plaines River Bridge.

“The purpose of the committee hearing this past week was to dispel some of the fear mongering going on and give some people perspective on actions being taken to ensure the Des Plaines River Bridge is safe,” Walsh said. “While the bridge is currently safe, we need to make fixing it a priority so that it’s condition doesn’t deteriorate further.”

Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) lists any infrastructure below a score of 80 as ‘deficient.’ The Des Plaines River Bridge has been rated with a 6 out of 100. While this number is alarming, IDOT’s ratings are not just indications of structural safety, but an overall rating pending lanes on a bridge, average daily traffic, roadway width and more. It has been previously reported that IDOT has been inspecting the bridge twice a year and the project to rebuild the bridge is still in the study phase. However, given that the bridge handles on average 42,000 vehicles everyday with an ever increasing amount of freight traffic, IDOT has stepped up its safety inspections on the bridge and is sending money for emergency repairs.

In addition, Walsh introduced House Joint Resolution 50, which would authorize the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority (Tollway) to expand the Tollway’s authority over additional parts of I-80, specifically the stretch from I-294 to Route 47 in Morris.

“The bridge was originally designed as a rural bridge, however today, with the booming freight and logistics businesses popping up all around Will County, the increased traffic has caused the bridge’s rating to decrease at a much faster rate,” Walsh continued. “Now that we’ve had the hearing, I hope we’re able get everyone in a room to take proactive action.”

“The people that will benefit the most from this will be honest working people and middle-class families,” Walsh said. “Governor Pritzker did the right thing by signing this executive order to pay state workers what they’re rightfully owed.”

In 2015, Rauner froze incremental pay increases for over 20,000 state employees. These gradual step increases were promised as part of a contract with the state workers’ union, AFSCME, but unilaterally blocked by the Rauner. A court order sided with the workers over Rauner, citing that the state was obligated to pay its workers what was negotiated, but the Rauner administration did not comply. Walsh, a life-long union member, is glad to see steps being taken to correct the string of broken promises made by Rauner to middle-class workers.

“I’ve been saying from the very beginning that these promises were made and we had to keep them,” Walsh said. “Illinois has its fair share of problems that need to be addressed, but by refusing to honor the terms of the contract that was made, former Governor Bruce Rauner hurt working families and wasted taxpayer dollars on an unnecessary legal battle.”

“It is reassuring to see Illinois withdraw finally from the disastrous Crosscheck Program.,” Walsh said. “We have better options available and thanks to the unanimous decision by the Illinois State Board of Elections, we can now pursue them.”

The Interstate Voter Registration Crosscheck Program, often referred to simply as “Crosscheck”, was created by Kris Kobach, head of President Donald Trump’s Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity. It is an interstate program designed to identify voters illegally registered in multiple states, but has proven to be unreliable, unprotected, and racially-biased. Since 2015, Crosscheck has only identified and prosecuted a small handful of instances of voter fraud.

Walsh previously filed House Bill 4542 in the 100th General Assembly which would have prohibited Illinois from using Kobach’s disastrous Crosscheck program in favor of the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC), a non-partisan, more secure, more accurate voter registration data comparison system. Illinois will continue to participate in ERIC while also entering into a data-sharing agreement with Indiana.

“Crosscheck failed to provide a safe and secure way for us to keep track attempted voter fraud,” Walsh said. “At the end of the day any of the supposed benefits of Crosscheck were overshadowed by the problems it caused.”

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Larry Walsh, Jr., D-Elwood, co-sponsored legislation that will protect working class families from being unnecessarily removed from the Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP).

“As a proud father of three, I want to make sure the children of hard working folks in Illinois have proper access to child care,” Walsh said. “Many working-class families rely on CCAP so that they can go to work or school, and without access, it forces many parents to make a difficult decision on what’s best for the future of their family.”

CCAP is a Department of Human Services (DHS) program that provides child care to low income and working families. In July 2015, cuts to the CCAP resulted in 30,000 hard working families being turned away by program. House Bill 5599 establishes the income level to qualify for CCAP. This does not change any of the costs to the DHS, as House Bill 5599 matches the current eligibility requirements, but putting this income level into Illinois Law prevents the DHS from changing the eligibility requirements and cutting families from the program.

“Proper child care programs, such as the CCAP, are an investment into our children and Illinois,” Walsh said. “We need to make sure all Illinois families who need this help are able to get it.”

“Folks who are working for a living counts on these tax credits as part of their financial planning,” said Walsh. “As a proud union member, I know firsthand that unions provide the representation to ensure a living wage and quality healthcare, and the expenses to have that support should be counted as a tax deduction for working families.”

HB 5521, backed by Walsh, creates a state income tax deduction for union dues when there is not one at the federal level. All union dues were previously tax deductible on federal income taxes, but the new Republican tax plan removed most of these tax deductions. HB 5521 replaces the tax breaks taken away from by congress by allowing any individual paying union dues to write off the full amount on their state taxes.

“We need to be helping our families here in Illinois, and by helping people keep more money in their pockets, we can grow our state economy,” Walsh said. “It’s the folks that are working every day that deserve the tax breaks, and if the federal government won’t help them, Illinois will.”

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood, recently voted to override Gov. Bruce Rauner’s veto of a measure that will help more families collect loved ones’ life insurance policies and crack down on big insurance companies that try to deny benefits to surviving relatives.

“By vetoing this legislation, Governor Rauner was choosing to side with large insurance corporations over the wellbeing of countless grief-stricken Illinois families,” Walsh said. “Overriding the governor’s veto sends the message that our laws should always be on the side of people who work hard and play by the rules, not by big businesses that try to rig the system and cheat customers.”

Walsh’s House Bill 302 requires insurance companies to review their records dating back to 2000 and compare them with the Social Security Administration’s Death Master File to determine if there are any outstanding balances owed to beneficiaries. According to audits from the treasurer’s office between 2011 and 2015, more than $550 million in death benefits were not paid out to families in Illinois. With the House and Senate overriding the governor’s veto of House Bill 302, companies will now be required to complete more thorough checks and issue payments in a timelier manner.

“My hope is that families will quickly receive what is owed to them and that this legislation will help families who have suffered a loss cover expenses,” Walsh said. “When families are unable to collect life insurance benefits because insurers aren’t holding up their end of the bargain, our entire community is hurt as final expenses are left unpaid and families struggle. I won’t let families and small businesses in our community suffer in order to pad the profits of big insurance companies.”

JOLIET, Ill. – With the cost of higher education continuing to rise, state Rep. Larry Walsh, Jr., D-Elwood, will help residents receive the financial assistance they need to pay for their schooling at a College Financial Aid Information Session on Monday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. at the Joliet Moose Lodge, located at 25 Springfield Avenue in Joliet.

“Whether an individual enrolling in college for the first time or returning to further their education, financial assistance is available to help cover the costs of going to college,” Walsh said. “Every student should fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid to see if they qualify for grants or low-interest loans.”

Walsh’s free event will feature experts from the Illinois Student Assistance Commission who will discuss the different forms of financial aid and work-study programs that are available, answer questions about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), explain how student loans work, detail application deadlines and provide other helpful tips.

Families unable to attend this presentation can still find helpful information on making college more affordable at www.isac.org. For more information, or to RSVP, please contact Walsh’s constituent service office at 815-730-8600, or StateRepLarryWalshJr@gmail.com.

“I appreciate the experts from ISAC for partnering with me for this event and helping answer any questions residents have about covering the cost of higher education,” Walsh said. “I encourage the parents of high school seniors and juniors, as well as non-traditional students, to attend this presentation and learn about the financial assistance available.”
