ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – Standing against increased attacks on immigrants in the 53rd district and around Illinois, state Rep. Mark Walker, D-Arlington Heights, is applauding Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s recent signing of two laws extending greater protections to immigrant youth.

“Our immigrant communities are a vital part of what makes our district diverse and unique,” Walker said. “Those coming from other countries contribute to our local culture and to our economy. I’m saddened by the continued attempts to make life harder for our friends and neighbors and I’ve pledged to protect the rights of immigrants – especially their children. That’s why I’m glad to see Governor Pritzker recently signed into law two bills I supported which protect immigrant youth.”

Signed into law on Tuesday, House Bill 836 doubles by 365 days the amount of time a child can be appointed a legal guardian if their parent is detained or deported by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. House Bill 1553 better enables undocumented youth to obtain visas specific to undocumented minors who have been abused, neglected or abandoned. Walker co-sponsored both bills.

“While Washington may be trying to strip immigrants of their rights, Illinois is standing firmly with those seeking the American Dream,” Walker said. “Our state is stronger with immigrant families. We must protect children, regardless of their immigration status, and these new laws empower us to accomplish that goal.”
