SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – A measure sponsored by state Rep. Karina, D-West Chicago, that would expand access to mental health resources for students recently passed the Illinois Senate with overwhelming bipartisan support.

“College can be a tough transition period for young adults as they move toward newfound independence,” said Villa. “Students often feel pressure, whether it be stress from taking out students loans, or their efforts to excel in class. With my experience as a school social worker, I believe it is extremely valuable for students to be aware of the mental health resources that are available to them.”

Villa’s House Bill 3404 will require Illinois’ nine public universities and community colleges across the state to make all information related to mental health and suicide prevention services offered on campus readily accessible to students. Villa’s measure received widespread bipartisan support in both the Illinois House of Representatives and Senate, and now moves to the governor’s desk to be signed into law.

“My legislation will ensure that our institutions of higher education are actively promoting the mental health resources available to students on campus,” continued Villa. “Spreading awareness on campus will help to create a culture that fosters mental health and overall wellness.”
