SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – A measure backed by state Rep. Michelle Mussman, D-Schaumburg, will implement a certification program to educate gun dealers on best business practices to halt the insurgence of firearms into the illegal market.

“One important step towards addressing the gun violence epidemic that is gripping our country is taking action against the illegal firearm market and trafficking that occurs in our own state,” said Mussman. “The idea of licensing gun dealers in our state is a widely supported idea, and is a commonsense approach to addressing gun violence.”

Senate Bill 337 will require gun dealer licensing, requiring gun dealers and their employees to pass background checks, and requiring shops to be open to inspection by the Illinois State Police. The measure will also require video surveillance of gun shops, as well as require training on good business practices, such as theft prevention, to keep guns from entering the illegal firearm market.

“Holding gun dealers accountable is just one way to help promote gun safety and accountability, but it is an important step to take,” said Mussman. “I urge my colleagues to support this piece of gun safety legislation which represents years of negotiation and compromise.”
