CHICAGO – State Rep. Mary Gill, D-Chicago, is highlighting a new round of state funding to assist local school libraries in their operation and in purchasing new books, periodicals, e-books, audiobooks and other learning resources.

“School libraries play a significant role in expanding the horizons for students,” Gill said. “They encourage independent learning, spark new interests and encourage lifelong growth. It’s critical that we provide proper financial support to aid them in their mission and in acquiring new material”

Grants for libraries statewide were announced earlier this month by Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, who also serves as State Librarian. Amounts are based off of a per student funding formula for schools with a qualifying library and are appropriated by the Illinois General Assembly. Gill backed this year’s state budget, which will support:

– $1,254.93 for Alsip, Hazelgreen and Oak Lawn School District 126,
– $850 for Atwood Heights School District 125,
– $850 for Palos Heights School District 128, and
– $850 for Worth Elementary District 127.
For more information, please contact RepMaryGill@gmail.com.
