EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – To provide residents with secure options to dispose of old documents with personal information, state Rep. Katie Stuart, D-Edwardsville, and state Sen. Rachelle Crowe, D-Glen Carbon, are teaming up to host a free paper shredding event on Saturday, Sept. 25 from 9 a.m. to noon at Granite City High School, located at 3101 Madison Ave. in Granite City.

“Many of us have documents with personal information like bank statements or old bills piling up at home,” said Stuart. “Shredding these documents is an easy way to prevent identity theft and get rid of paperwork that you no longer need by safely and conveniently disposing of them.”

Stuart’s shredding event is free and open to the public. Face coverings are required for this event. Documents will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, with a limit of up to two boxes per person. All items to be shredded will be locked in the shred truck to ensure confidentiality before being transported for destruction.

“Please mark your calendar for this event to safely destroy personal documents,” continued Stuart. “I’m glad to bring these services to area residents and look forward to a successful event.”

AURORA, Ill. – To help residents securely dispose of old documents containing private information, state Rep. Barbara Hernandez, D-Aurora, is co-hosting a free Community Shred Day with KTC Credit Union on Saturday, Oct. 5th from 9 a.m. to noon at the KTC Aurora Branch parking lot, located at 320 E. Indian Trail in Aurora.

“It is extremely important to properly and securely get rid of any documents with personal information on them to protect yourself from identity theft,” said Hernandez. “Confidential information should never just be thrown away in the trash, and I encourage residents to take advantage of this convenient and free method of disposal.” 

Residents can bring any type of document for secure shredding, including outdated financial information, medical and utility bills, receipts, and more. The event will happen in the parking lot of the KTC Credit Union building, where residents can pull up in their cars and documents will be shredded securely on-site. The first 50 cars will receive a free gift. Hernandez and KTC are also encouraging attendees to bring donations for the Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry in Aurora. Items needed include canned foods, home cleaning supplies and kitchen garbage bags. Monetary checks are also accepted.

“I am excited to be working with KTC to offer this event for the community,” said Hernandez. “I hope to see residents of my district come and consider donating food to the Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry, while simultaneously ensuring that their private and sensitive information is protected and properly disposed.”

​CHICAGO – In an effort to help residents stay safe and secure, state Rep. Jaime Andrade, D-Chicago, held a free community shredding and prescription drug disposal event in Albany Park over the weekend. Over 50 residents came out to shred documents containing sensitive personal information and dispose of expired or unneeded prescription medication through the Cook County Sheriff’s Office.

The event was held at Roosevelt High School in Albany Park in partnership with state Sen. Iris Y. Martinez, and 33rd Ward Ald. Rossana Rodriguez.

“These are my favorite kind of events to put on, because we’re providing a very valuable service to the community at no cost,” Andrade said. “Anyone who wasn’t able to come out should stay in touch with my office to keep updated on where we’re going to be in the future.”

NORTHLAKE, Ill. – Helping community residents responsibly dispose of outdated and sensitive personal information, state Rep. Kathleen Willis, D-Northlake, and state Sen. Don Harmon, D-Oak Park, will be offering residents a free shred day event on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 9 a.m. to noon at Willis’ office at 112 N. Wolf Rd., Northlake.

“Shred events offer residents a free avenue to properly eliminate their sensitive information that scammers are always trying to obtain,” Willis said. “This is a great event that helps bring the community together for a bit and helps responsibly discard papers.”  

Willis and Harmon’s shred day will help residents dispose of up to two full boxes of old papers, including old bills, receipts, outdated financial documents, medical records and more. Residents are asked to please remove staples and paperclips from papers prior to attending the event to avoid damaging shredding equipment. At the event, there will be opportunities for residents to dispose of old medications and outdated electronics. This event is free and open to the public.

“I’m always surprised to hear about the latest scheme that takes place from cases of stolen identity, and no one should take their security lightly,” Willis said. “Shredding your documents can help that much more to help prevent financial catastrophe from happening.”

Wilson Ave. on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 9 a.m. The event will be held in the parking lot of the high school, located off Leland Ave.

“Securely destroying documents with personal information on them is one of the most important steps you can take to protect against identity theft,” said Andrade. “Senator Martinez and I are bringing this service to the community for free so that families can keep their information safe.”

Residents are invited to bring up to two bankers boxes of documents to be destroyed onsite. Items such as paper clips or plastic binders that could obstruct the shredder should be removed beforehand.

Prescription drugs will also be collected during the event to provide residents a way to responsibly dispose of unused or expired prescription drugs. However, liquid medications, medical devices or items containing needles will not be accepted.

“This is an opportunity to take a step towards helping residents keep their information safe during a time when identity theft is on the rise,” said Andrade. “I hope to see everyone there later this month.”
