SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – State Rep. Michelle Mussman, D-Schaumburg, is drawing attention to a new state tax credit available to teachers and school administrators who personally purchase school supplies for their students.

“In our current economic climate in Illinois, it is critical for people to hang onto as much of their money as they can,” said Mussman. “This is especially true for our teachers who so often use their own money to purchase everyday school supplies for their students, the costs of which can add up very quickly.”

The new credit is equal to the amount paid for instructional materials and supplies, up to a maximum of $250. The credit is in addition to the current $250 federal deduction, and Mussman is highlighting its availability to teachers, principals or aides in a qualified school who work at least 900 hours during a school year.

“This is a great opportunity for teachers who sacrifice so much to earn some of their money back. In addition to the federal tax credit, they can take advantage of this state credit when they file their taxes,” said Mussman. “For the countless teachers who believe in the future of our children regardless of the personal costs to themselves, I applaud their selflessness in providing the best possible education for our children.”
