DES PLAINES, Ill. – In an effort to curb gun violence and casualties from mass shootings, state Rep. Marty Moylan, D- Des Plaines, introduced and passed legislation through the House that bans “bump stocks” and “trigger cranks” for rifles in the state of Illinois.
“I’ve seen enough. It is now time to act and do something about these heinous mass shootings,” Moylan said. “We need to put our children and families first by passing common-sense gun reforms, and this can be a simple bi-partisan measure that even the president has agreed to.”
Moylan sponsored new legislation, House Bill 1467, on Monday which would ban both “Bump Stocks” and “Trigger Cranks”. Both these devices are used to rapidly increase a rifle’s rate of fire. Last October, the Las Vegas Shooter used “bump stock” modifications to enable his semi-automatic rifles to shoot like full-automatic rifles, capable of firing up to 800 bullets per minute, resulting in 58 casualties and over 500 wounded.
The current law bans machine guns and prohibits weapons that fire more than one round per function of the trigger. Gun manufacturers have created loopholes around the current law by creating these “bump stocks” and “trigger cranks” to accelerate the rate at which the trigger is technically “pulled”. Moylan’s legislation would ban those loopholes. House Bill 1467 passed through committee on Tuesday, and passed the House on Wednesday.
“I will continue to stand up for children and families throughout our communities,” Moylan said. “It’s an up-hill battle, and I will not back down because if we can pass common-sense gun reforms and even one life is saved because of these measures, it will all be worth it.”
