SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Committed to lowering taxes on working families, state Rep. Elizabeth “Lisa” Hernandez, D-Cicero, is backing legislation that would create a state sales tax holiday on clothing and school supplies in early August.

“Donald Trump’s tax plan is an absolute disgrace as it provides massive tax cuts for billionaires and powerful corporations on the backs of working families,” Hernandez said. “We must take it upon ourselves to take action at the state level to provide working families the tax cuts they deserve.”

Hernandez is a chief sponsor of House Bill 4494, which would create a state sales tax holiday on essential school necessities from August 5, 2018 through August 11, 2018. The last sales tax holiday for clothing and school supplies in Illinois was in 2010. Like the previous tax break, the Hernandez-backed measure will lower the sales tax rate from 6.25% to 1.25%, covering certain clothing and school supply items such as school uniforms, shoes, book bags, lunch boxes and notebooks.

“Governor Rauner betrayed working families when he applauded Donald Trump’s tax plan,” Hernandez said. “Politicians like Bruce Rauner and Donald Trump only care about themselves and their wealthy friends, so we must fight like never before to create an economy that works for everyone and lift up working families.”
