Rep. Carroll: New Bill to Strengthen Firearm Safety

BUFFALO GROVE, Ill. – New legislation introduced by state Rep. Jonathan Carroll, D-Buffalo Grove, would require gun owners to provide fingerprints when obtaining or renewing Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) cards.

“Tragically, we now live in a time where gun violence has reached unprecedented levels, devastating entire communities,” Carroll said. “In an effort to reduce these egregious gun-related crimes, I’m taking action to provide law enforcement with additional intelligence, through fingerprinting, that would identify perpetrators in the pursuit of justice.”

Carroll’s House Bill 4168 would require gun owners to provide fingerprints at the time of issuance or renewal of administering FOID cards. These fingerprints would then be submitted to the Department of State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation and vetted for criminal history to further ensure the safety and security of gun ownership.

“This common sense bill advances the public interest by strengthening public safety, and moves us forward to minimize the risk of bad actors from obtaining lethal weapons.” Carroll said. “I will continue to fight for measures that increase the safety and security of our communities by giving law enforcement the tools they need to do their job.”
