CHICAGO – Veterans, service members and the dependents of veterans requiring legal support now have access to free legal assistance through a statewide hotline launched earlier this month thanks to legislation passed by state Rep. John D’Amico, D-Chicago.
“Our veterans have sacrificed so much to protect our families,” D’Amico said. “The new veteran hotline will provide our brave servicemen and women legal services they need to protect themselves and their families from legal troubles.”
The Illinois Armed Forces Legal Aid Network (IL-AFLAN) was created by legislation passed by D’Amico in 2015. The legislation tasked the not-for-profit Illinois Equal Justice Foundation, with administering free civil legal aid to veterans and active duty military personnel with an income below 80 percent of the Chicago area median income ($63,200 annually for a family of four). Veterans can speak to an attorney from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, by calling 855-IL-AFLAN (855-452-3526). Attorneys can assist veterans with discharge upgrades, benefits appeals and civil legal problems such as family, housing and consumer issues.
“Veterans and active-duty service members should spread the word about this valuable resource,” D’Amico continued. “All veterans should have the ability to access the legal protections they fought so hard to defend.”
