JOLIET, Ill. – As friends and family begin their holiday shopping, state Rep. Larry Walsh, Jr., D-Elwood, is encouraging families to take extra precautions to protect young children from potentially dangerous toys.

“One of the most magical things about the holidays is seeing a little boy or girl open a present and seeing the joy in their eyes on receiving a now toy,” Walsh said. “However, it’s important for parents to take extra precautions with younger children to avoid accidents.”

Walsh is recommending that parents and those purchasing gifs for children to review this year’s toy safety guide, released annually by the Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s office. The attorney general has released a toy safety guide each year for the past ten years. Since January, there have been 68 recalls of children’s products by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, and Jones is advising parents to be cautious when buying gifts both in-store and from second-hand sellers and websites like eBay.

“Children should only be allowed to play with age-appropriate toys, and families should review the toy safety guide to avoid recalled toys,” Walsh said. “By taking these steps, we can make sure everyone has a happy and safe holiday season.”

The 2017 Safe Shopping Guide can be found at www.illinoisattorneygeneral.gov. For more information about recalled products, residents can also contact the Recall Hotline at 1-888-414-7678.
