DES PLAINES, Ill. – With the holiday shopping season underway, state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, is reminding local families to take extra precautions to protect young children from potentially dangerous toys.
“As a new grandfather, I am looking forward to the holidays and spending it with friends and family,” Moylan said. “However, it’s important for parents to take precautions and ensure the gifts their child is receiving are both age appropriate and safe for them to have.”
Moylan is encouraging parents and those purchasing gifs for children to review this year’s toy safety guide, released annually by Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s office. Since January, there have been 68 recalls of children’s products by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, and Moylan is advising parents to be cautious when buying gifts both in-store and from second-hand sellers and websites like eBay.
“One of the most popular toys this year, fidget spinners, can pose a choking hazard to young children due to the small pieces they contain,” Moylan said. “By reviewing the toy safety guide and only allowing children to have age-appropriate toys, we can cut down on accidents and help keep our children safe this holiday season.”
The 2017 Safe Shopping Guide can be found at www.illinoisattorneygeneral.gov. For more information about recalled products, residents can also contact the Recall Hotline at 1-888-414-7678.
