Connor and McGuire to Host Identity Theft Workshop with Comptroller’s Office

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Concerned about the rising rate of identity theft, state Rep. John Connor, D-Lockport, is partnering with state Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, and Comptroller Susana Mendoza’s office to host a free Identity Theft Workshop for residents on Tuesday, Dec. 5 at 10 a.m. at the White Oak Library’s Crest Hill branch, located at 20670 Len Kubinski Dr. in Crest Hill.

“As a former criminal prosecutor, I saw first-hand the damage identity theft can cause to families,” Connor said. “Criminals are increasingly sophisticated, and it’s important that residents know ways to protect themselves online and in the real world.”

Representatives from the Comptroller’s office will provide tips and strategies on how to lower an individual’s risk at having their identity stolen. They will discuss warning signs and how to identify fraud, as well as what steps to take to reduce possible losses if an identity is stolen. Presenters will highlight safe internet practices and ways to keep physical documents with personal information out of the hands of criminals.

“The Equifax data breach was a wake-up call for many residents who might not have been aware they were at risk,” Connor said. “Identity theft can happen to anyone, but it’s important to know what options you have to lower your risk before it’s too late.”
