Moylan Supports Two-Year Property Tax Freeze

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – As area property taxes continue to skyrocket, state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, recently voted for legislation would freeze property taxes for two years.

“Taxes are killing our state’s future and forcing more and more families to leave Illinois,” Moylan said. “I have been fighting in Springfield to provide real relief by freezing property taxes, opposing higher income taxes, and rejecting taxes on everyday items like groceries and medicine.”

Moylan’s Senate Bill 851 would provide true property tax relief for Illinois homeowners by freezing property taxes for two years, only exempting the most financially distressed school districts. Earlier this year, Moylan helped pass legislation increasing both the general homestead and senior citizens homestead exemptions to $10,000 and $8,000, respectfully. Moylan also stood up to Springfield politicians by opposing the income tax increase, fought to kill a new tax on retirement income, and is backing efforts to permanently ban the beverage tax that was recently rolled-back in Cook County.

Along with advocating for lower taxes on the middle-class, Moylan worked with Democrats and Republicans to pass historic education funding reform that guarantees area schools will receive over $28 million in state funding.

“We have a duty to our children to create a financially stable state for them to live and work in and unfortunately far too many Springfield politicians are robbing them of the future they deserve,” Moylan said. “I will continue opposing efforts to raise taxes on middle-class families and will keep pushing for pro-jobs initiatives.”

Senate Bill 851 passed the House and now awaits further consideration in the Senate.
