Manley Pushes for Property Tax Freeze, Relief for Homeowners

JOLIET, Ill. – Continuing her efforts to provide meaningful property tax relief to homeowners, state Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, voted for a new property tax relief package that will freeze local property tax rates for two years.

“Everywhere I go, I hear from people about how much their property taxes are hurting them and their family,” Manley said. “We need to do something that will provide immediate property tax relief, which this legislation can do.”

Manley is backing Senate Bill 851, which freezes property taxes for all units of government in Will, Lake, McHenry, Kane, DuPage and Cook Counties for two years. During this time, homeowners would have to approve any proposed property tax increase. Additionally, the measure would provide relief to taxpayers by increasing senior-specific exemptions, as well as exemptions for other homeowners. Under the plan, voters would have the ability to extend the freeze beyond two years.

“If we take no action, we risk losing residents from our community who wish to stay in our area,” Manley said. “Seniors and middle-class families in recent years have had to make the difficult decision of whether or not to stay in their home. That is not acceptable, and I will continue to fight for real, effective property tax relief.”
