CHICAGO – Dozens of residents had the opportunity to responsibly discard private, identifying documents at a Shred-A-Thon event hosted by state Rep. Sonya Harper, D-Chicago, and 4th Ward Ald. Sophia King this past Saturday.

“I always want to be accessible to my residents and bring resources directly to them that make their lives easier,” said Harper. “Shred-A-Thons are a great and convenient way to help people safely dispose of their personal documents and protect themselves against identity theft.”

Harper and King joined together to host a community Shred-A-Thon for residents to safely and freely dispose of old, outdated and sensitive information that could be used to compromise one’s identify if it fell into the wrong hands. Regularly hosting events that benefit residents is one way Harper feels she can stay in touch with residents and receive feedback on her performance in Springfield.

“Working with Rep. Harper to help our constituents discard their personal documents and information is what we elected officials should be doing,” said King. “Regularly offering helpful resources and services to our residents is great way to respond to their needs. This service also provides protection against identity theft and provides a great opportunity for direct engagement with our constituents.”

Harper represents the 6th District which includes all or portions of Armour Square, Bridgeport, Chicago Lawn, Englewood, Gage Park, Marquette Park, Canaryville, Back of the Yards, New City and West Englewood in the city of Chicago.
