Rep. Mah Launches Petition to Support Senior Tax Relief

CHICAGO –In response to recent studies ranking Illinois in the top 10 states with the highest tax burden, state Rep. Theresa Mah, D-Chicago, is co-sponsoring a measure to remove burdensome taxes on seniors when they are purchasing health-related household necessities. Along with her support of this important policy change, community members may see her circulating a petition in favor of these tax relief efforts.

“People in our communities are feeling the brunt of rising levels of federal, county, city and state taxes every day and that makes this a highly important measure,” said Mah. “For some seniors, these rising costs are making it nearly impossible to make ends meet, so we have to ensure that we provide them relief on the items they need to literally survive.”

Rep. Mah is a co-sponsor of House Bill 4111, a measure that makes senior citizens in the state exempt from being taxed on bare household health necessities. Among the items eligible for the tax exemption are groceries to be eaten at home, medicine, medical devices and items used for wellness in diabetic patients.

“I invite everyone to sign my petition in support of some tax relief for our elderly residents,” said Mah. “We need to show lawmakers in Springfield that seniors are not ATM’s and that people on fixed incomes need to be protected, and that if more revenue is needed, we should be looking at the millionaires and billionaires to pay their fair share.”

House Bill 4111 is currently assigned to the House Rules Committee and awaits further action from the House. To show support, community members can sign Rep. Theresa Mah’s petition by calling her full time constituent service office at 872-281-5775.
