Moylan Sponsoring Legislation to Crack Down on Explosive Chemicals

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – In response to reports that Las Vegas shooter Stephen Paddock possessed 50 pounds of a pre-packaged highly explosive chemical known as “tannerite”, state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, has introduced legislation to better regulate this dangerous material.

“As more information comes out from the Las Vegas shooting, it is clear the attacker had planned to inflict as much damage as possible,” Moylan said. “Detonating the amount of tannerite this madman possessed could have resulted in many more innocent people being killed and I am demanding we take action to prevent this tragedy from happening in our community.”

Moylan is sponsoring House Bill 4117, which requires individuals purchasing or possessing pre-packaged explosive components to have a Firearms Owners Identification card. Las Vegas shooter Stephen Paddock had 50 pounds of tannerite in his car, along with 1,600 rounds of ammunition. Moylan’s measure also bans “bump stock” modifications that the Las Vegas shooter used to turn his semi-automatic rifle into an automatic weapon capable of firing up to 800 bullets per minute.  Moylan has also introduced legislation to ban military-style assault weapons like those used in the senseless mass shooting in Las Vegas.

“It is clear the gun lobby has zero concern for protecting innocent Americans and they only care about boosting the profits for gun manufacturers,” Moylan said. “A commonsense first step is the banning of bump-stocks and doing everything in our power to prevent tannerite from falling into the wrong hands.”
