CHICAGO – State Rep. John D’Amico, D-Chicago, is drawing attention to a new state tax credit available to teachers and school administrators who personally purchase school supplies for their students.

“Too often I hear stories about budget cuts that have resulted in teachers having to purchase instructional supplies for their students with money out of their own pockets,” D’Amico said. “I want as many educators as possible to know about the state support they can receive for these selfless acts of kindness.”

The new state tax credit is good for up to a maximum of $250 paid for instructional materials and supplies used in the classroom. D’Amico is highlighting the new state credit in addition to the current $250 federal deduction for teachers, principals or aides who work at least 900 hours during a school year. According to a 2014 study by the National School Supply and Equipment Association, 92 percent of teachers spend their own money on classroom supplies, with the average public school teacher spending $500 out of pocket on their students each year.

“Our teachers are tasked with one of the most important roles in our society and as such, deserve to be provided with the same level of support and resources they need to do their jobs as would be expected in any other profession,” D’Amico continued. “I fought for this tax break because of my enduring belief that the state ought to serve as a stronger partner in both our teachers’ and their students’ success in the classroom.”
