SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Following the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, has introduced legislation to ban military-style assault weapons and converters that can transform semi-automatic weapons to the more deadly fully-automatic version.
“I am sick and tired of innocent friends, family, neighbors and children being massacred in our country’s streets and classrooms,” Moylan said. “Military-style assault weapons have only one purpose: to take human life. These dangerous weapons have no place in our community.”
The Moylan-introduced House Bill 4107 bans military-style assault weapons like those used in the senseless mass shooting in Las Vegas. His measure also bans “bump stock” modifications that the Las Vegas shooter used to turn his semi-automatic rifle into an automatic weapon capable of firing up to 800 bullets per minute.
Military-style assault weapons were not only used in the Las Vegas massacre that resulted in 58 dead and over 500 wounded, but have been used in numerous shootings across the United States, including 49 deaths in last year’s Orlando nightclub shooting, 16 deaths in the 2015 San Bernardino terrorist attack, and 26 deaths, including 20 children, in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre.
“This legislation is to not just honor the victims of these heinous gun crimes, but to prevent future attacks from occurring,” Moylan continued. “While Washington politicians refuse to take action, I will do everything in my power to protect our families from gun violence.”
