Moylan Criticizes Governor Rauner’s Veto of Worker Protection Measure

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, is urging his colleagues to override Gov. Bruce Rauner’s veto of legislation designed to protect the rights of working men and women in Illinois.

“As a proud retired union electrician, I know firsthand how important unions have been to creating and building up our nation’s middle class,” Moylan said. “Governor Rauner’s veto of this measure shows he cares more about corporate profits than protecting the rights of working men and women.”

Moylan’s Senate Bill 1905 protects all Illinois workers by any unit of government from enacting “right-to-work” laws pushed by Gov. Bruce Rauner and his right-wing allies. The governor’s plan would weaken the ability of individuals to collective negotiate for fair wages, safe workplaces and competitive benefits. Studies show these “right-to-work” laws cut middle-class wages.

Moylan’s bill is supported by the Illinois AFL-CIO, Illinois Federation of Teachers, and Associated Fire Fighters of Illinois.

“I am ready to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to ensure workers in our state have the ability to collectively bargain for a fair wage and safe working conditions,” Moylan said. “By overriding the governor’s veto, we can send a message that Illinois will not engage in a race to the bottom, but will instead stand up for worker’s rights.”
