D’Amico-Supported Legislation to Protect Sexual Assault Survivors Becomes Law

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Amidst reports that law enforcement agencies must wait up to 24 months for critical rape kit testing results required to advance sexual assault investigations, state Rep. John D’Amico, D-Chicago, is applauding bold reforms being signed into law that will help create one of the nation’s first Rape Kit Tracking & Survivor Notification Systems.

“The survivors of sexual assault have immense courage for coming forward and subjecting their bodies to the invasive, four-hour process of evidence collection required for a rape kit,” D’Amico said. Criminals who commit sexual assault should not be allowed to escape justice. I believe these reforms will improve this cold reality.”

The D’Amico supported House Bill 528 would require a “Sexual Assault Evidence Tracking and Reporting Commission” to create a plan for the implementation of one of the nation’s first automated Statewide Rape Kit Tracking & Survivor Notification Systems. The System would voluntarily allow sexual assault survivors and law enforcement agencies to monitor the status of rape kit testing in real time via a secure, web-based system.

“I cannot imagine the pain survivors undergo when they know that information exists to put their attackers away, combined with the frustration of waiting for months – or even years – for answers,” D’Amico continued. “No one should ever be treated in such a manner.”
