Moylan Declares War Against Cook County Beverage Tax

DES PLAINES, Ill. – Continuing his fight to protect working families from unfair taxes, state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, has launched a petition calling on Cook County officials to rescind the sweetened-beverage tax.

“Most of the residents that I have talked to can’t afford to continue to pay any new taxes,” said Moylan.  “They are going out of the county to buy their groceries, fill their gas tanks and shop away from our local businesses.”

Earlier this month, the Cook County Sweetened-Beverage tax took effect and taxes sweetened beverages within the county at a rate of one cent per ounce. Moylan believes this “penny-per-ounce” tax is unfair and disproportionally hurts middle and working class families.

In response, Moylan has launched a petition that supports his effort to repeal and ban Cook County’s unfair beverage tax, which is hurting local businesses and adding to the burden of middle and working class families every day.

“Let’s send a message to the Cook County, out-of-touch politicians who are trying to nickel and dime the hard-working people of Illinois and declare war against this unfair, burdensome tax,” Moylan said. “Our residents can’t afford this tax and it is hurting our local businesses. Please sign my petition so that we can repeal and ban the beverage tax, and protect the many middle class families and local businesses in Cook County.”

Last week, Moylan Co-sponsored House Bill 4083 which would eliminate the beverage tax and prohibit any local government in Illinois from implementing such taxes in the future.
