PLAINFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, attended the Plainfield Area Interfaith Food Pantry for their open house and ribbon cutting on Thursday, Oct. 22.
The food pantry began after the devastating tornado of 1990, when community members came together to collect food, clothing, and other necessities for those in need. As the pantry’s website explains, “People of different faiths, beliefs, backgrounds, and ethnicities joined together with one common purpose: helping their neighbors.”
The food pantry relies on regular donations to keep the shelves stocked. Monetary donations allow for bulk food purchases, with most inventory donated or purchased from the Northern Illinois Food Bank at reduced rates.
“No one should have to face food insecurity alone,” Rep. Manley said. “Whether you can make a donation or volunteer your time, you can help keep food on the shelves and ensure our neighbors have somewhere to turn for support.”
Volunteer support is also critical, particularly from 7:30 am to noon Monday through Saturday. Interested individuals can call 815-439-8394 to schedule an initial visit and learn about available opportunities.
“As rising costs stretch household budgets, more families may find themselves needing help to get through the month,” Rep. Manley said. “This pantry helps bridge that gap and put food on the table.”
If you or someone you know is facing food insecurity and lives within the Plainfield School District 202 boundaries, upcoming distributions are on Nov. 17, Dec. 1 and Dec. 15 from 8-11 a.m. The pantry is located at 22525 W. Lockport St., Plainfield, IL 60586.
