Harper Hosts Joint Town Hall with Sen. Hunter to Discuss State’s Balanced Budget

CHICAGO – State Rep. Sonya Harper, D-Chicago, recently partnered with state Sen. Mattie Hunter, D-Chicago, to update residents on the balanced budget that they passed to end the state’s unprecedented, Rauner-created crisis.

“The state’s budget provides funding that most vulnerable populations have been waiting on for three years,” Harper said. “Our budget responsibly cuts spending and government waste by $3 billion, while also protecting essential services.”

At the Town Hall, both Harper and Hunter detailed what the budget plan means for the state. Had no budget plan been pursued, violence prevention programs would have been forced to shut their doors and families would have gone without child care. Harper’s plan not only protected these and other essential services, but also cut more government bureaucracy than the governor’s budget proposal.

“The governor’s crisis has come to an end, but we have to find a way to protect the state’s most vulnerable citizens from one individual’s self-interests,” said Harper. “I will continue working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to ensure that our schools are equitably funded.”
