EVANSTON, Ill. – Wednesday, the United States Supreme Court ruled in the case of Louisiana v. Callais to dismantle many voting rights protections contained in the Voting Rights Act. The ruling is expected to allow southern states to draw new congressional maps to favor Republicans by splitting majority-minority districts previously protected by the Voting Rights Act.
State Rep. Robyn Gabel, D-Evanston, responded with the following statement:
“In gutting the hard-won rights preserved by the Voting Rights Act, this far-right extremist Supreme Court is opening the door to voter discrimination nationwide. While decisions like these are disheartening, in Illinois we are committed to fighting back. Very recently, I helped advance protections for voters here in Illinois, which enshrine the vital freedoms the court’s decision has put under threat.
“While the work isn’t done, my commitment to democracy and fairness for Illinoisans is unwavering. My obligation to democratic rights will continue to drive my actions as a lawmaker.”
