CHICAGO – State Rep. Camille Y. Lilly, D-Chicago, and Senate President Don Harmon wrapped up their last Health and Human Services Listening Sessions at the Oak Park Public Library, bringing together key community organizations to discuss pressing issues in health, housing, and social services and to explore ways to strengthen programs that serve Illinois families.
“Listening to community organizations gives us the insight we need to craft policies that truly meet local needs,” Lilly said. “We appreciate the time and knowledge each group shared. Their input will help shape legislation that improves health, housing, and social services for families across Illinois.
During the session, representatives from local organizations shared valuable insights into their operations, the challenges they face, and opportunities for growth and expansion within the community. These discussions inform legislation that Lilly and Harmon are advancing in Springfield to better support health and human services programs across the state.
Participating organizations included:
- John H. McIlwain, Oak Park River Forest Infant Welfare Society, which focuses on maternal and infant health services
- Athena Williams, Oak Park Regional Housing Center, which provides housing assistance and advocacy
- Joseph Kyle, Excel Community Development Corporation, which works on economic development and community support initiatives
- Diane Slezak, AgeOptions, which serves older adults with health, wellness, and social programs
- Tasha Carla, UIC Cancer Center, which provides resources and support for cancer prevention and treatment
“Engaging directly with those who serve our communities on the front lines ensures that our legislative efforts are grounded in real-world experience,” Lilly said. “These sessions provide invaluable insight into how we can better support organizations that make a tangible difference in people’s lives.”
The listening session built on ongoing efforts by Lilly and Harmon to maintain open communication with community organizations and residents, ensuring that legislation reflects the priorities and needs of those it impacts most.
