SPRINGFIELD, Ill.- State Rep. Lilian Jiménez, D-Chicago, is supporting legislation to increase Illinois’ Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), offering additional financial relief to working families across the state.

“Every day, hardworking Illinoisans are doing everything right—working, raising families and contributing to their communities—yet too many are still struggling to keep up with rising costs,” said Jiménez. “By increasing the state’s Earned Income Tax Credit from 20% to 30% of the federal credit, this legislation would put more money back into the pockets of the people who need it most.”

The Jiménez-backed House Bill 4680 would amend the Illinois Income Tax Act to raise the state’s match of the federal EITC, which is designed to support many modest-income workers, particularly those with children. Illinois has gradually expanded its EITC over the years, increasing the match in phases to better reflect the needs of working families. This proposal continues that progress by boosting the credit from 20% to 30%, helping eligible taxpayers to receive a larger refund when they file their state taxes.

Because eligibility for Illinois’ EITC is tied to the federal credit, the program remains straightforward and accessible for taxpayers. The legislation would take effect immediately and does not include a sunset date, providing long-term stability and predictability for families who rely on the credit each year.

“Working families are the backbone of Illinois’ economy, and they deserve a tax system that recognizes the challenges they face every day,” said Jiménez. “This proposal builds on Illinois’ ongoing efforts to support modest-income workers and parents, helping them better afford essentials like housing, groceries and child care while strengthening communities across our state.”
