OTTAWA, Ill. – State Rep. Amy “Murri” Briel, D-Ottawa, released the following statement in response to this morning’s U.S. Supreme Court decision to strike down significant portions of President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariff agenda:

“Today we celebrate a significant decision made by the justices of the Supreme Court to bring Donald Trump’s reckless economic experiment to a halt. Over the last year, these tariffs have directly sabotaged the American working class—nevermind, Trump’s fascination with reactive policy has hurt American farmers who grow our food, keep our grocery stores stocked, and who wake up at dawn every morning to work in the fields so families have food on the table,” said Briel. “I’m very pleased with this decision, as I know lawmakers, small businesses, and residents alike can agree. Thank you to the six justices who devoted their time, compassion and expertise to this issue and for holding Trump’s delirium to standards rightfully set by our constitution.”

Studies show that U.S. citizens paid 96% of the tariffs implemented by the federal administration since the beginning of 2025, costing Americans roughly $160 billion, a number that was set to significantly increase in 2026.

Briel has led several formal resolutions condemning the federal administration’s tariff plan. Most recently, she supported House Resolution 623, which prompts the United States Treasury to issue $2,000 payments to every American household with an annual income below $250,000 to account for the lost wages and savings undone by Donald Trump’s tariff scheme that raised prices for every U.S. family.

“This is promising news, but the fight to restore affordability for every family continues. That’s why I’m locked in to how we can continue taking steps to ease the cost-of-living horrors that way too many families are facing right now,” said Briel.
