OAK PARK, Ill. — State Rep. Camille Y. Lilly, D-Chicago, released the following statement following the passing of Reverend Jesse Jackson on Tuesday:

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Reverend Jesse Jackson, a trailblazer whose unwavering dedication to civil rights, social justice, equity, and equality transformed countless lives. He made a lasting impact not only on the city of Chicago and this country, but on the world — a legacy that will endure for generations.

“He fought for us when it would have been far easier to give up, especially in the face of repeated threats against his life. For the majority of his life, he was on the front lines fighting for fairness and opportunity, while giving a voice to the marginalized and inspiring generations to continue the work of building a society where everyone, regardless of their background, has a chance to thrive.

“He was a true giant. His leadership, courage, and steadfast commitment to nonviolent change leave an enduring legacy that will continue to shape our nation and the world. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, his friends, and all those whose lives he touched.”
