OTTAWA, Ill. – State Rep. Amy “Murri” Briel, D-Ottawa, the only openly neurodivergent member in the Illinois House of Representatives, will host her monthly Neurodivergent Council on Feb. 21 for residents to collaborate and discuss policy ideas that could better reflect the needs of the neurodivergent community. The theme for February’s meeting is “Autism and Burnout.”
“February is all about addressing burnout and how that can affect someone on the spectrum, resources they can trust and people they can turn to when feeling low. Although every person is different, many Autistic individuals and those on the spectrum often feel burnt out because of ‘masking’ habits that can be very overwhelming without the right outlet,” said Briel. “It’s our goal that at the conclusion of this meeting, folks will be confident in how to better navigate these unwelcome feelings.”
Briel will host a morning council meeting on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Reddick Public Library Community Room (1010 Canal Street) in Ottawa. An additional meeting will be held at 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the DeKalb Public Library Story Room (309 Oak Street) in DeKalb. Any adult on the spectrum is welcome to join the council; the council is not limited to DeKalb and LaSalle county residents.
“These council meetings have been a hit for residents near and far to have an open discussion about not only what it’s like to live on the spectrum—but how we can improve today’s landscape and better advocate for neurodivergent children and adults in the future. It’s heartwarming to gather with residents as passionate about autism visibility and awareness as I am. All are welcome—whether you’re on the spectrum or just want to engage with us and learn more,” said Briel.
The council meets every third Saturday of the month, unless otherwise indicated. For more information, reach out to contact@staterepbriel.com.
