CHICAGO – On Friday, IL State Rep. Kimberly DuBuclet, D-Chicago, joined Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza, museum leaders, and fellow elected officials for a check presentation ceremony at the historic Washington Park home of the DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center.

“Black museums are guardians of history that too often goes untold or unprotected,” DuBuclet said. “This investment is about empowering these institutions to continue telling the full, truthful story of our communities and ensuring future generations have access to the knowledge, culture, and contributions that shape who we are.”

State Rep. DuBuclet helped secure $1.9 million in state funding for the DuSable Museum by voting for the state budget during the final days of the General Assembly’s legislative session last May. As House Chairwoman of the Committee on Museums, Arts,
Culture, and Entertainment, DuBuclet has prioritized strengthening Black-led and culturally significant institutions through sustained operational and capital support.

The funding will help ensure the DuSable Museum remains a nationally recognized center for education, research, and cultural preservation, while reinforcing Illinois’ commitment to supporting museums that document Black history, creativity, and resilience.

“I’m proud to help deliver this funding to the nation’s oldest independent Black history museum,” Mendoza said. “Institutions like the DuSable play a vital role in preserving history, educating the public, and honoring the lived experiences and achievements of Black communities. Supporting them is essential to preserving our shared story.”

The investment underscores Illinois’ continued commitment to empowering Black museums as pillars of education, cultural memory, and community pride.
