DEKALB, Ill.– Seeking to establish local living, health, and education programs in her communities, state Rep. Amy “Murri” Briel, D-Ottawa, recently secured generous funding for Dekalb County Community Gardens to build a community center for the organization Rooted for Good.
“The center will be a place where people can receive support in more ways than one,” Briel said. “We’ve seen prices for food increase, housing expenses threaten livelihoods, and the conditions of the job market. This center will help members of our community find a way to get back on track.”
The new center will offer job training for people with and without disabilities, classes on topics such as nutrition and health, and a garden center to boost the local economy. The center will also function as a primary location for food distribution for those in the community experiencing food insecurity.
The founder and project director of Rooted for Good, Dan Kenny, celebrated the win with a statement.
“Rooted for Good is so grateful and excited to receive this support through Rep Briel’s office,” Kenny said. “This funding will help tremendously to move the impactful and transformative Rooted For Good Community Food Center in DeKalb closer to a reality.”
Briel, who led the request to have the funds for the project released, was able to secure $794,000 in funding.
“Rooted for Good dedicates passionate work uplifting the people who rely on their services,” said Briel. “This was a cause that I advocated for without giving up, and I’m glad to see this process kick off.”
