GURNEE, Ill. – Illinois residents and property owners will be able to use geothermal energy systems for power—a more affordable, efficient, and environmentally-friendly power source—under a bill sponsored by state Rep. Joyce Mason, D-Gurnee, that was included in an energy omnibus bill (Senate Bill 25) passed Oct. 30.
“Too many working Illinois residents can’t afford their energy bills. Geothermal energy is one of the many ways we are trying to lighten this financial burden, especially as we approach the cold winter months when people need heat and light,” said Mason.
The provision led by Mason adds geothermal energy as a power source option for residents, businesses, and public buildings, as energy bills are skyrocketing statewide.
Geothermal energy systems are less expensive to operate and less harmful to the environment— specifically air quality—than other energy systems. Additionally, geothermal energy is a naturally replenishing resource, meaning a stable, consistent flow of power. Mason’s provision in Senate Bill 25, formally tied to House Bill 3399, seeks to make geothermal energy more accessible by working with the Geothermal Homes and Businesses Program under the Illinois Power Agency to set pricing, identify residential vendors and explore renewable energy pricing for Illinois households.
“We can’t do anything to slow down the rapidly progressing tech industry that is raising energy prices, but with this bill, we can provide homeowners and property owners with an option that won’t put a strain on them the way current energy costs are,” said Mason.
