SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Building on his longtime efforts to lower property taxes for homeowners, state Rep. Anthony DeLuca, voted for the senior property tax freeze income threshold increase to better protect seniors from sudden and unexpected tax increases.
“The senior property tax freeze is an important tool, responsibly helping our most vulnerable stay in their homes,” DeLuca said. “To make sure it operates as intended, it’s important we raise the income threshold over time to address inflation and other factors. This is a needed update that will help seniors get the relief they deserve.”
DeLuca’s vote for an expansion of the senior property tax freeze will ensure more seniors 65 or older can continue to qualify for relief. Senate Bill 642 increases the maximum income limitations for both the Low-Income Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze Homestead Exemption and the Senior Citizens Real Estate Tax Deferral Program to $75,000 in tax year 2026, $77,000 for tax year 2027 and $79,000 for tax years 2028 and after. Without this responsible income limit increase, many vulnerable seniors could have been put at risk of losing access to their benefit entirely.
“Having income over the threshold eliminates access, which is why this is an important update for older adults,” DeLuca said. “I’m glad we were able to get this passed, but reforming our property tax system to lower property taxes for all remains my top priority.”
Senate Bill 642 passed with bipartisan support and will head to the governor for final approval.
