CLEVELAND – Reflecting her years of experience and work to improve higher education opportunities, state Rep. Katie Stuart, D-Edwardsville, has been named Chair of the Midwest Higher Education Compact (MHEC).

“I am beyond honored to be named Chair of the Midwest Higher Education Compact,” said Stuart. “Having worked and advocated for institutions of higher education for a majority of my life, I am eager to continue supporting them in this role.”

The MHEC is comprised of 12 Midwestern states and is focused on strengthening post- secondary education, advancing student success and promoting regional economic development. It is one of four regional higher education compacts in the United States, and it creates and supports research, contracts, programs and initiatives for all public and private nonprofit institutions of higher education in the Midwest. They aim to save states and students millions of dollars every year through strategic cost-saving opportunities.

Stuart comes into the role with years of experience as chairperson for the House’s Higher Education Committee. She prioritizes legislation focused on uplifting students and faculty while making higher education more affordable. Before being elected, Stuart taught math at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
