State Rep. Sonya Harper, D-Chicago, is fighting to expand access to fresh, nutritious food in vulnerable communities by passing a bill that encourages innovative approaches to addressing food deserts.
“Everyone, regardless of where they come from, deserves a shot at leading a healthy life,” Harper said. “I will continue to do everything in my power to monitor our state's approach to combating food insecurity facing so many across our state so everyone can flourish. This work is more important than ever as the Trump administration continues to sow utter chaos in our country.”
Harper passed House Bill 1607, which would bring together policymakers, agriculture professionals, and other stakeholders to form a Commission on Ending Food Deserts, responsible for reviewing the effectiveness of current state-led efforts to combat food deserts. The commission will develop concrete solutions regarding policy, funding, initiatives, and best practices to expand access to healthy food in every community.
The commission will submit a report to the governor by January 1, 2028.
“I know families are hurting right now with the suspension of SNAP benefits,” Harper said. “This commission will help to lay the groundwork for building a stronger, more resilient food access network that will help mitigate harm in future crises.”
Harper’s Bill passed both chambers and awaits the Governor’s signature.
