SPRINGFIELD, Ill – State Rep. Sonya Harper, D-Chicago, is calling out the Trump administration for violating speech and press rights that have been fundamental to a constitutional and just democracy for over 200 years.

“Donald Trump has completely disregarded the First Amendment rights of journalists, protesters and dissenting commentators,” Harper said. “This is because when people use those rights to speak out against him or report the truth, it makes it much more challenging for him to accomplish his ultimate goal of becoming a dictator.”

Harper sponsored House Resolution 505, which condemns the Trump administration’s efforts to exert editorial control over media companies by using the official powers of government to punish dissent and reward permits as textbook corruption and restricting the right to free speech.

“We will continue to do everything in our power to ensure that our constitutional rights are protected and stand up against the chaos and lawlessness brought upon our state by Donald Trump,” Harper said. “This resolution expresses our resolve, which is the first step in preserving the constitutional rights that our ancestors fought and died for.”
