ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. — State Rep. Mary Beth Canty, D-Arlington Heights, was joined by special guest Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch at a community town hall to give local residents an opportunity to discuss the issues that matter to them with state leaders.
“Lawmakers are most effective when they are in touch with the priorities of the people they represent. I’m grateful to Speaker Welch for joining me during this town hall so we can both connect with the people here,” Canty said. “Both the Speaker and I have been fighting to cut the cost of living, combat a White House bent on creating chaos, reform Illinois’ property tax system and propel the growth of clean energy technology in our state. There’s more work to do, but the steps we took this year are a great foundation for a better future.”
Canty recently worked with Speaker Welch to craft a fiscally responsible budget that cuts unnecessary spending while funding building blocks for the future like youth jobs programs, the “Made in Illinois” investment program for local businesses and more scholarships for teachers.
“Now more than ever, people need to know they are being heard, so while my title may be Speaker of the House, I think it’s even more important to be Listener of the House,” Welch said. “Families and seniors in big cities, suburbs, and small towns alike are feeling the burden of rising costs and lost opportunities—and we see Washington politicians are creating more problems than they’re solving. But we can still move forward as a state when we work together, when we listen to one another, and when we prioritize common sense and the common good.”
