EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – State Rep. Jay Hoffman, D-Swansea, joined state Rep. Katie Stuart, D-Edwardsville, and Madison County Historical Society members Thursday to highlight a $700,000 state grant that will support the organization’s newly imagined Madison County History Museum and new exhibit designs.
The historical society will further welcome the public at a reception to celebrate and discuss plans on Wednesday, Oct. 8 from 4 to 6 p.m. at 715 N. Main St. in Edwardsville.
“The history of our local communities is important to our culture as a state,” Stuart said. “That’s why I made it a priority to advocate for funding to support the preservation of Madison County’s legacy. We can’t build a brighter future if we don’t remember how we got there.”
“It’s important that we keep alive the history of this community,” Hoffman said. “This state support will help ensure the Madison County Historical Society can continue to offer new, engaging exhibits for years to come. I appreciate the passion and hard work from everyone involved to put us in a position to move forward.”
The Oct. 8 event will include further details about new exhibits that will reimagine the historic 1836 Weir House, with work expected to begin before the end of the year. The event is free and open to the public, and interested participants are encouraged to RSVP by Sept. 30 by calling 618-656-1294 or emailing leslie.bednar@madcohistory.org.
