CHICAGO – In response to a Tuesday morning announcement that union workers at the Museum of Science and Industry workers had voted to authorize a strike, state Rep. Kim DuBuclet, D-Chicago, issued the following statement:
“I stand with the 108 Museum of Science and Industry workers as they exercise their constitutional right to organize and demand better working conditions and higher wages. As a lifelong Chicagoan and Chairwoman of the House’s Museums, Arts and Entertainment Committee, I have seen the passion and dedication of the hardworking individuals who ensure our city’s world-class museums are able to function. Their work is essential to the public, and they deserve to be compensated in a manner that recognizes their impact.
Museum workers have not received a raise since 2022, many are ineligible for holiday in spite of the museum staying open for all but two days of the year, and there is no parental leave for expectant mothers and fathers. These conditions are appalling, and I urge the Museum’s leadership to work together — in good faith, with its employees to avoid a strike and reach a resolution that works for all parties.”
Museum employees represented by AFSCME Council 31 authorized a strike with a 95% vote in favor. The museum is expected to return to bargaining on Oct. 6, and a strike date has not yet been announced.
